Why Do Teeth Need to Be Extracted?
A tooth consists of an outer crown above the gum line and one or more roots anchored within the jawbone beneath it. Damage to either the crown or the root can lead to extraction, most often due to trauma or bacterial infection.
Trauma & Fractures
Trauma can cause a tooth to fracture. Unlike other bones, a tooth’s blood supply is limited to its inner layer, so fractures in the outer layers can’t heal. A fractured tooth may become too brittle to withstand chewing stress. In some cases, a restoration or crown can protect what remains. When the fracture is too extensive to repair, removal is the only option.
Bacterial Infection & Bone Loss
Bacteria release acids that decay tooth structure and can enter the root canals, where nerves run, causing significant pain. From there, bacteria can travel to the jawbone and cause infection. Over time, they can also erode the bone itself, leaving a tooth without adequate support.
Severe periodontal disease follows this pattern: bacterial infection progressively destroys gum tissue and the underlying bone until the tooth can no longer be saved. In some cases, orthodontic treatment also requires removing a tooth that’s too crowded in the arch to shift into alignment.

Teeth tend to drift when the space next to them opens up. Those behind a missing tooth tilt forward; those directly opposite the gap erupt outward and become taller. Options include a removable partial denture, a fixed bridge, or a dental implant covered by a crown.
Is a Tooth Extraction Painful?
Modern anesthetics have made it possible to eliminate sharp pain during an extraction. Most patients feel pressure and movement but not pain. For patients who remain anxious, nitrous oxide or anti-anxiety medications can reduce awareness of any discomfort. Sedation is available for patients who can’t tolerate treatment while awake.
