How Tooth Decay Develops
A cavity forms when bacteria in the mouth produce acid that gradually erodes tooth enamel, creating a hole in the tooth structure. Some cavities cause no pain at all until decay has progressed significantly, which is why an exam and X-rays are the only reliable way to confirm what’s happening.
Left untreated, decay deepens. Once it reaches the inner pulp of the tooth, a filling may no longer be sufficient, and root canal therapy or extraction can become necessary. A lost or cracked existing filling carries similar urgency: the exposed tooth surface is vulnerable to rapid new decay and can cause sudden, sharp pain. Catching decay early typically means a simpler, less invasive path forward.
