How Teeth Whitening Works
Every effective whitening product — whether sold over the counter or used in a dental office — relies on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as its active ingredient. Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide upon contact with the tooth, which then penetrates the enamel surface and lightens the pigments embedded there. Longer contact time with enamel produces lighter results. The central variable is moisture: hydrogen peroxide is inactivated quickly by saliva, so controlling moisture is what separates whitening methods from one another.
Over-the-counter rinses and drops use low peroxide concentrations and struggle to maintain consistent enamel contact, which limits their effectiveness. Strips and generic trays perform better but still allow saliva intrusion. Custom tray whitening uses a moderate-concentration gel in a tray fitted precisely to your teeth, reducing that intrusion significantly. In-office whitening applies a higher-concentration gel after barriers protect the gums, lips, and cheeks — maximizing both contact time and safety.
Internal Bleaching for a Single Darkened Tooth
Standard whitening works from the outside in. When a single tooth darkens significantly because blood vessels inside it have stopped circulating, external bleaching can’t reach the source of the stain. Without active blood flow, dark debris accumulates in the tooth’s pores with nothing to flush it away.

The procedure involves cleaning and sealing the tooth’s canals through root canal therapy, then placing a whitening gel inside the tooth itself. Because the gel is applied from the hidden back surface, the front of the tooth doesn’t need to be altered. It’s a targeted solution that no amount of external whitening can replicate.
