What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism refers to both tooth grinding and clenching. Both involve pressing the upper and lower teeth together. When teeth are clenched, they stay in place; during grinding, the lower jaw moves laterally while the teeth remain pressed together. Bruxism affects people of all ages, and because roughly 80 percent of bruxers don’t know they do it, many never connect their symptoms to what’s happening at night.
Stress is believed to be the underlying cause. Bruxers typically cycle through periods of stopping and resuming, and the habit most often occurs during low-attention, stationary activities: sleeping, working at a computer, driving, reading, and watching television. If you suspect you may be grinding, check the biting surfaces of your back teeth.
Over time, edges that should be sharp or rounded become flat and smooth. A partner or family member may also hear grinding sounds or notice the lower jaw moving during sleep.

How Bruxism Damages Teeth Over Time
As the upper and lower teeth continuously slide across each other, individual teeth can shift or tip. That movement is gradual, but the risk of cracking is more immediate.
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but during bruxism, a tooth gets pressed against something equally hard. The sustained force can crack it. A cracked tooth often becomes sensitive to pressure, cold, sweetness, or heat, and it typically needs a crown or onlay to cover its outer layer and hold the tooth together, much like a cast stabilizes a broken bone.
Root canal therapy is sometimes needed as well, to address the nerve tissue inside. Caught early, a small crack can be protected from further trauma and may not require a crown or onlay at all. Abnormal wear on chewing surfaces can also cause fractures that, if left untreated, may eventually require crowns, onlays, or root canal therapy.

The forces involved in grinding are considerable. Over time, the jaw muscles responsible for clenching and grinding become sensitive, stiff, and tender. That fatigue produces jaw pain, morning headaches, or recurring migraines.

In some cases, it interrupts the grinding habit itself. It doesn’t cure bruxism, but it stops the cycle of damage.
