What Is a Dental Implant?
An implant is an artificial tooth root inserted into the upper or lower jawbone. It’s made from titanium, a biocompatible metal the body accepts without rejection, similar to the materials orthopedic surgeons use for knee and hip replacements. Once placed, the jawbone gradually grows into and bonds with the implant through a process called osseointegration. That bond creates a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or full denture.
Because an implant replaces the root itself, it also protects the jawbone. Without a root to stimulate the bone, the jaw begins to atrophy over time, altering the shape of the face and making future tooth replacement more difficult. Removable dentures and bridges don’t address that underlying bone loss. An implant does.
How Implants Help Patients Who Use Complete Dentures
Complete denture wearers often struggle with denture looseness, which makes chewing and speaking frustrating. Implant-supported dentures solve this with small connectors, similar to coat snaps, placed inside the denture and anchored to implants. The denture locks firmly in place during meals and conversation and can still be removed the same way you’d separate two snap fasteners. For many patients, the difference in stability and confidence is immediate.
How Much Healing Time Is Needed Before an Implant Can Serve as an Anchor?
Healing time depends on the size of the implant, the volume and density of the surrounding bone, and the expected stress the implant will handle. In some cases, an implant can bear weight immediately, but the typical healing period is 3 to 6 months while osseointegration occurs. Dr. Wilson reviews these variables with you before treatment begins so you know exactly what to expect.
What Is the Fee for Implant Treatment?
The fee varies based on the number of implants and several other factors. A standard full-sized implant costs approximately $1,800 to place. Separate fees apply for the crown, bridge, or denture, and for the connectors used to attach them. In some cases, lower dentures can be anchored to mini implants, which are shorter, thinner, and less costly at approximately $175 each. Five or six mini implants are sometimes used together to anchor a complete lower denture.
Are Any of the Fees Covered by Insurance?

Dental Implant Candidacy: Who Is a Good Fit?
An implant’s stability depends on its length and width relative to the bone where it’s placed. In areas with strong, ample bone, a longer and wider implant can be placed securely. In areas with limited bone volume, firm integration may not be possible without additional preparation, such as bone grafting.
Most healthy adults are good candidates. Some conditions that affect healing or bone quality can influence outcomes, but they don’t automatically disqualify someone.
