Tooth Decay
Tooth decay occurs when plaque combines with the sugars and starches in your food, producing acids that attack tooth enamel. Adults can develop decay at the gum line and around the edges of existing fillings, not only on new tooth surfaces, so this isn’t just a childhood concern.
Warning signs include tooth pain, sensitivity to sweets or temperature, visible pits, and dark spots on the enamel. Treatment depends on how far the decay has progressed: a filling for early cavities, a crown when more structure is lost, root canal therapy when the pulp is involved, and, in severe cases, extraction. Dr. Wilson walks through every available option before any procedure begins, explaining what each involves and working at a pace you’re comfortable with.

Gum Disease
Periodontal disease isn’t just an oral health issue. Studies have linked it to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, and it’s one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. According to the CDC, nearly half of U.S. adults aged 30 and older have some form of periodontitis.

Tooth Erosion
Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth structure from acid attacking the enamel. Unlike decay, which bacteria drive at specific points on the tooth, erosion results from direct acid contact — from citrus, sodas, sports drinks, or acid reflux — and affects broad surfaces rather than localized spots. Symptoms range from sensitivity and discoloration to cracking, cupping, and surface roughness. Erosion is often caught at a routine checkup before the patient notices anything at all.
Treatment depends on severity. Early erosion may respond to remineralizing agents and changes to diet or reflux management. More significant structural loss may call for bonding, veneers, or crowns to restore both appearance and function. Because erosion typically involves both restorative and cosmetic concerns, Dr. Wilson takes time to understand what you’re experiencing before recommending a path forward.
Tooth Sensitivity
Sensitivity occurs when enamel thins or gum recession exposes the dentin underneath, allowing temperature, pressure, or sugar to reach the tooth’s nerve. The result is pain or discomfort from hot or cold drinks, sweets, cold air, or even brushing and flossing. Teeth grinding (bruxism) can accelerate enamel wear and worsen sensitivity over time.
Sensitivity can also signal something more serious, like a cracked tooth or early decay. A clinical evaluation is the only reliable way to tell the difference. Treatment ranges from desensitizing toothpaste or fluoride gel for mild cases to bonding, a crown, or a gum graft when structural loss or recession is involved. Dr. Wilson’s gentle approach is well-suited to patients who’ve put off dental visits because the treatment itself is uncomfortable — we build a care plan around your specific triggers and tolerance levels.
